From 1972 to 1977 Dr. Middelmann worked for the Microeconomics Institute of the Iron and Steel Industry in Düsseldorf. 1977 he joined the Krupp group. From October 2001 until January 21, 2010 he was appointed as Vice Chairman of the Board of Management of ThyssenKrupp AG. Dr. Middelmann is now member of a number of supervisory boards and advisory councils of industrial enterprises and bank.

Dr. Middelmann studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt and business administration at the Rhine-Westphalian University in Aachen. He obtained his doctorate (Dr. rer. oec.) from the Economics Faculty of the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1976. In 2003 he was awarded an honorary professorship by the University of Tongji in Shanghai. 2006 conferral of honorary doctorate by the faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Ruhr University Bochum.
He is married and has five children.
