From the treatment of waste air to CO2 recovery – LANXESS is using cutting-edge technical solutions at its production sites to reduce and prevent greenhouse gas emissions. The specialty chemicals group was able to cut its direct greenhouse gas emissions by more than half throughout the world from 2007 to 2009. During this period, annual emissions from the group’s plants were reduced from 3.5 million to 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents. Emissions per metric ton of manufactured products fell by almost half to 0.3 metric tons of CO2 equivalents. The defined goal by 2015 is to reduce specific CO2 emissions as well as the specific energy consumption by 10% per business segment.
In Germany, LANXESS is doing pioneering work in the field of nitrous oxide reduction in particular. The commissioning of a second nitrous oxide reduction plant, or LARA, at the Krefeld-Uerdingen site helped to completely neutralize emissions of nitrous oxide, which is extremely harmful to the climate. As a result, LANXESS is cutting annual CO2 equivalents by 1.5 million metric tons compared with 2007.
